1998 CPCUG Science Fair Awards

The Capital PC User Group takes pleasure in recognizing the achievements of 20 young computer scientists from 6 jurisdictions around the DC metropolitan area. We were delighted to see their displays and enjoyed talking with them before the main program. Once again the 1998 Science Awards Ceremony was a great opportunity to share our enthusiasm for computing.

CPCUG President Lillian Milliner presented the awards, assisted by Program Chairman Rich Schinnell. Rich doubled as photographer to capture the event for publication in the CPCUG’s newsletter, The Monitor.

CPCUG Special Recognition Plaques, $50 savings bonds, and a one-year membership were given to the following:

Does the Pitch Make the Pitch? - Ms. Brinig analyzed the Billboard top ten pop music recordings from a number of years to determine whether they had predominantly treble or bass frequencies. She discovered that treble is most prevalent, which came as a surprise to our judge, considering the emphasis apparently placed on bass in today’s music.

ABC Links: Assistance with Books Through Computer Linkage. - Mr. Ashman wrote a program that acts as a front end to the library's computer system. It calls it up, figures out what books are due, renews them, and warns you about fines.

Thank you CPCUG Science Fair Judges

We owe much of the pleasure of presenting these awards to our excellent volunteer judges. We had 5 times as many volunteers in 1998 so we were able to cover ten fairs instead of two as for 1997.

Our thanks also for invaluable support from CPCUG staff member Lynne Sturtz and the CPCUG Board. Once again, we are making a difference in the lives of these talented young people. If you would like to be included in next year’s effort as a judge, mentor, or both, please contact Walt Houser, CPCUG Science Fair Coordinator. You do not need to be a science whiz to be a judge. An interest in listening and learning from young people is the essential qualification.

Walt Houser CPCUG Coordinator.
