A sophomore from Benjamin Banneker Academic High School, Khalilah Karim's project was entitled "Cyberbuilder: Do It Yourself Technology". The project consisted of assembling a 486 computer out of used parts salvaged from equipment at the Howard University Engineering Computer Lab where she has been an intern for the last three years. Khalilah's presentation also included comprehensive assembly instructions and descriptive tables outlining how she selected compatible components. Khalilah also won first place for computer projects in the Senior Division of the DC Mathematics, Science and Technology Fair.

Bell Multicultural Senior High School sophomore, Yibing Tan presented a project was entitled "How To Fix The Horrible Y2K Problem". His project included a written explanation of the Y2K problem, a PowerPoint presentation about Y2K, and a description of the results of his testing of five computers for Y2K compliance (the Pentium, 486dx, and Apple passed; the 486sx and 386 didn't). A native of Shenyang in the Liaoning Province of China, Yibing moved to Washington last year. Yibing also received an honorable mention for his computer project in the Senior Division of the DC Mathematics, Science and Technology Fair.
