Fractals in the Stock Market and in Nature - Fractals in Everyday Life

Andrew Das Sarma

This project is on fractals in the stock market and in nature. The stock market is a fractal in its fluctuations; I tracked these fluctuations and the fractal properties through the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ Composite Index. My means of measuring the fractality of an object was through the Hausdorff-Besicovitch Dimension (also known as the Fractal Dimension, which is shorter and easier to say). This number, which can be obtained from a calculation, helps to determine the “extent” of a fractal. I also calculated the Fractal Dimension of the Chesapeake Bay. While the Coast of Norway is hailed as having the highest fractal dimension of any geographical feature on earth (1.52), I found the Chesapeake Bay to have a fractal dimension that is very close to that of the Coast of Norway (Chesapeake Bay = 1.46). This is a new result as far as I know.
